The Farm Behind the Feltings

Nestled in the lush landscape of the Shenandoah Valley is a small farmstead, where three alpacas and three Romney sheep grow their fiber and wool.  It is from these six little animals full of personality that I obtain some of the materials I need to create my work.

The animals rotationally graze, which is healthy for both the land and animals, are fed grain and hay supplemented with minerals, and in return they produce a hearty fleece.  The animals are gently shorn once a year to remove the burden of a hot coat of fiber as the summer approaches.
