Finnian the Fox Kit
An inquisitive, perceptive fox kit peeks over the greenery it had been concealed behind, with bright eyes and alert, observant ears. Its focused expression and reddening coat indicate that it will soon grow into a majestic red fox that will dart along the forest floor.
The fox kit has a high alpaca fiber content, lending its coat a silky softness. The textured wooly background of this piece was once a blanket that has been given a new life as a woodland backdrop. It is 100% wool and feels uniquely soft and scrunchy, like densely curled moss. The foliage in the foreground is made from dyed mohair curls, which come from an angora goat.
This piece has been created using a single barbed needle about three inches long. Small wisps of fiber are placed on the fabric background and tapped into position with the needle by hand. The needle tangles the fibers and meshes them with the fabric base. As more colors of fiber are added, an image is produced gradually. The technique of needle-felting, or dry felting, is very time intensive and requires many hours of delicate work.
